Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Birmingham
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the fastest-growing martial art in the UK — and at MMA Factory in Harborne you can learn it from a black belt with over 25 years on the mats. First two sessions free.
What is BJJ?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is grappling: taking an opponent to the ground, controlling them through superior position, and finishing with a submission hold. There's no striking, which is exactly why it's so trainable — you can practise at full resistance, every session, without getting punched in the head. It's often called "human chess" because strategy and technique consistently beat strength and size.
BJJ classes at MMA Factory
- Fundamentals — the core positions, escapes and submissions every grappler needs. Built for beginners.
- Gi & no-gi — we train both rule sets.
- Kids & juniors — structured, safe classes that build discipline, fitness and confidence.
- Competition coaching — for those who want it. Our coaches' students have won gold at the BJJ Junior National Championships in both gi and no-gi.
Who teaches it
Head coach Jag Paul Plaha (black belt, 25+ years) and coach Amar Johal (brown belt, active competitor) lead every class personally. This isn't a franchise with rotating instructors — it's a proper academy where the coaches know your name and your game.

Frequently asked questions
Is BJJ good for complete beginners?
Yes — BJJ is one of the best martial arts to start from scratch because progress comes from technique, not athleticism. Our fundamentals classes assume zero experience.
Gi or no-gi — which should I start with?
Either. We teach both at MMA Factory. Gi (the jacket-and-trousers uniform) slows the game down and builds grips and detail; no-gi is faster and closer to MMA grappling. Most students end up training both.
Do you have kids' BJJ classes in Birmingham?
Yes — dedicated kids and junior classes run alongside the adult programme at Lordswood Boys' School sports hall in Harborne.
