Closed Guard: Your Home Base

MMA Factory · Birmingham · Updated October 2026

The closed guard is the position that made Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu famous: flat on your back, legs locked around your opponent — and somehow you're the one attacking.

What it is

You're on your back with your legs wrapped around your opponent's waist, ankles crossed behind them. In any other sport, being underneath means losing. In BJJ, closed guard is a weapons platform: your opponent is trapped inside the range of your hips, legs and grips, and every move they make to escape opens a door for you.

The one concept that unlocks it

Break their posture. An opponent sitting upright in your guard is safe; an opponent folded down onto your chest is in a world of trouble. Everything in closed guard starts with pulling them down using your legs and grips — curl your knees to your chest like a sit-up and drag them into you.
